What is Digital Content?

BCPS purchases annual subscriptions to a collection of databases which provide access to a wide variety of digital resources to address K-12 information needs. These digital resources include:

  • Evaluated Websites and education-friendly Web search engines
  • Full text e-Books and interactive eBooks
  • Articles from encyclopedias, reference books, magazines, newspapers, and journals
  • Videos, images, audio, and multimedia
  • Games, interactives, and simulations
  • Vocabulary development resources
  • Lesson materials, activities, and assessments

Why Use Digital Content?

  • BCPS invests significant funds annually for subscriptions to digital content aligned to national and state learning standards to support BCPS content curricula. Digital content supports the STAT initiative and BCPS Blueprint 2.0 Goal 1: Academics, by providing equitable resources for high quality instruction and promoting information, media, and technology literacy.
  • BCPS-licensed digital content includes a variety of media formats to address our students' diverse learning styles and engage 21st century learners: eBooks, audio, video, multimedia, images, intractives, etc.
  • Unlike many sources freely available on the Internet, subscription-based digital content is reliable, authoritative, age appropriate, frequently updated, ad-free, and includes a variety of learning supports to support sstudents' needs, including:  audio read-aloud of text; embedded dictionaries; translators; citation tools; Lexiles/reading levels, and more.

Accessing BCPS Digital Content

  • BCPS databases are accessible to the entire educational community 24/7 via the Digital Content Portal
    •  The Portal is just two clicks away from the BCPS homepage; just click on the STUDENTS Tab, then click Research, Study & Learning Resources
    • In the future, the BCPS-licensed digital content will be accessible through BCPS One with single sign-on access
  • Remote Access:  No logins are needed when accessing  databases from the Portal at school or elsewhere inside the BCPS network. From home or outside the BCPS network, unique logins are required for each database:
    • BCPS staff can get the Digital Content Passwords passwords sheet via the BCPS Intranet.
    • School library media specialists and teachers should provide students with a hard copy passwords handout.
    • These logins are for BCPS users only, and must not be posted on any public Website.
  • Mobile Access:  BCPS users can download the Gale AccessMySchooLibrary App for access to the Gale databases on mobile devices. BCPS users can also download the DestinyQuest App and Follett Shelf App for mobile access their school library collections and eBooks. For more information on installation and setup of the Destiny and Follett Shelf Apps, visit the Destiny Snapshot and Support page on this wiki or consult your school Library Media Specialist.

Creating Direct Links to BCPS Digital Content

Direct links to specific articles, videos, or other digital content resources are useful for providing teacher or student access to a particular database resource in curriculum materials or digital learning environments.  Some databases require a special procedure for creating a direct link to a specific resource; a direct link cannot always be created by simply copying the URL from the Internet address bar. Refer to the Direct Linking Instructions below to determine how to create a direct link from each database. These instructions are also included on the Snapshot for each database.

Lexile & Reading Levels

  • BCPS-licensed digital content includes text resources labeled by, and searchable by, Lexile and/or other Reading Levels.  Identifying resources by Lexile/Reading Level is useful for ensuring that students are able to comprehend assigned texts, and for encouraging students to read increasingly complex texts, a goal of the Common Core.
  • Teachers can use this Lexile Resource Page to build background knowledge about Lexile as a measure of text complexity. This resource page also includes instructions for locating Lexiles/Reading Levels in each BCPS database.

Digital Content SNAPSHOTS & SUPPORT Resources

A resource page for each BCPS-licensed database has been created to assist students, teachers, and curriculum office staff in using this digital content. Snapshot & Support pages include an overview of the database and outline of its content and features, navigation, and learning supports, as well as tutorials and educator resources
